As I took in my father’s recollection of the evening and the surrounding emotions, I can easily say it was one of the best days of my life. Leading my team out on the ice for the home opener, with my father and uncles in the stands, and getting the win—days like that for a man are few and far between.
I recalled countless childhood memories of the rides back and forth to the rink, chatting about life in the car, and looking up to see him in the stands. I considered the love and sacrifice of a father raising his son and the lifelong lessons that had ensued. Like a master builder, my father had laid the foundation, brick by brick, and had shaped a man.
Few men can recall the moment they arrived at manhood—I remember it vividly. That night, my father was no longer watching a boy play—he was watching a man coach his team, and the word destiny took on meaning at a brief moment in time at a hockey rink in suburban Chicago.
For memories so profound and powerful, defining these moments within the grand scheme of things becomes a difficult task. Are they, indeed, so grand? And so we reason about reasons. It is here where the philosophical consequences to our beliefs are met head-on, considering whether ours is an accidental or intentional existence and the implications of these beliefs as we attempt to define words like truth, purpose, morality, good, and evil.
We’ve opened the science books and heard the arguments for and against the existence of God, but now we close the books and lay our heads on the pillow. We turn, look out the window, and gaze at the stars. We shift our attention to the question of life having a greater meaning.
The first question: Is there even a “grand scheme of things” to begin with? World-renowned Christian theologian and philosopher William Lane Craig points to the Kalām cosmological argument, or first cause. The claim is simply that a beginning requires a cause.
